UPCOMING EVENTS
THE UMC: A CHURCH IN REVOLT, REFORM, OR REBIRTH?
Sunday, April 23rd and Tuesday, April 25th
Presented by Stan & Eva Rittgers, Pastor Becky, and Chris Weaver
The UMC has experienced much conflict and confusion during the past 10+ years over the issue of homosexuality in the church. The issue was discussed at a special General Conference in 2019, which only hardened existing strong positions. Since then, various resolutions have been proposed, but nothing satisfactory has been agreed upon. Today, a large number of local churches have applied for and are waiting for approval to “Disaffiliate.”
In this 2-day presentation, we will review these events, discuss the impact of COVID on denominational meetings, and discuss the reactions that have occurred in the meantime.
Following that, we will present a firsthand experience of a local church in Alabama whose decision has revealed strong opinions on one side and alienated life-long members on the other in a powerful way. The response of that exiled “Remnant” has been to link up with similar disillusioned members of a neighboring church to form a “New Church” start of sorts, offering hope and rebirth. Following this, we’d like to open up a discussion about where NUMC sees itself fitting into these positions, as well as what might be its potential ultimate affiliation.
GRADUATION SUNDAY
Sunday, May 28th
we will recognize high school and college graduates during the service and dedicate the connect time to them so that we can celebrate with them and hear where God is taking them in the future. If you have someone who has or will be graduating this Spring, please let the church know by May 10th!
